The Model "A"

I came out of the grocery store to find this vehicle parked in front of mine. Boy, was I out my league in a competition!

This is a big time restored 1929 Model A Sport Coupe. As I was finishing up, the owner appeared and insisted on allowing me more latitude in photographing it. People were stopping in the parking lot to gawk as well.

He had been the "chauffeur" for the previous owner who was a longtime antique car restorer in Cañon City, Colorado. When the previous owner entered a nursing home, he gave this vehicle to the present owner.

This is the 24 HP engine. There is no fuel pump; the tank is above the engine so it is gravity feed. The only problem is hills; sometimes it works best on steep slopes if one backs up them. In today's traffic laws, I suspect this is a town runabout!

The only belt driven devices are the water pump and the generator. Simplicity. One penalty of the "sloppy" fit of the cylinders is an oil change every 500 miles! Worse than modern diesels.

One of the levers on the steering column is the "spark advance". This is a device to make the spark occur sooner during starting. This was especially important when a crank was the starting device. This car has an electric starter.

I was impressed with how quiet it was as he drove off. And wondered how hard the ride was since Ford springs were overbuilt for endurance on the primitive roads of the day.

I have no idea what the padded box is for; I didn't have enough presence of mind to ask.
